Vessel with Black Knob

Southwestern Desert Mesquite Wood

19"W  x 9"H  x  14"W

This hand-formed piece was carved from a single piece of mesquite wood. Remarkably, the interior of this log proved to be almost blemish free, which is very unusual for this wood. The forming of the shape was quite whimsical, however with attention to scale and proportion. This piece also was quite remarkable in the thin shell I was able to work down to, enhancing another aspect of the beauty in this wood. The inner surface is colored lighter than the outer, and exhibits a scintillating color and texture under focused light. The flat planar surface at the top is a function of the original log, and seemed to fit in just fine with the overall look.
